Last Look: STL Photo Of the Week

Posted on September 06, 2019 in

On Wednesday, September 4 the McDonnell Douglas MD-80, also known as the Super 80, was retired from service by American Airlines. After over 30 years as the ‘workhorse’ of American, the last remaining MD-80’s headed to Roswell, New Mexico for their retirement. American hosted a “Super 80 Sendoff” gate celebration at St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL) to commemorate the historic occasion. Prior to ascending to the skies one last time, American Airlines Flight 9670 pushed back from the gate and received a water cannon salute. It then departed on Runway 30L and circled back to perform a flyby over the STL airfield - giving team members, customers, and the traveling public one last look at an aircraft that has reliably served millions of customers for decades.
