Historical Treasure: STL Photo of the Week
Posted on February 22, 2019 in
Since August 13, 1990 Black Americans in Flight, a mural dedicated to honor African-American achievements in aviation, has been displayed at St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL). Part of STL’s permanent art collection, Black Americans in Flight is a historical treasure composed of five panels depicting 75 different individuals who contributed to aviation history in the United States. The mural was completed by St. Louis artists Spencer Taylor and Solomon Thurman over the course of two years. Black Americans in Flight was briefly removed from display last year while repairs were made to the surrounding area. During that time, lighting and climate control upgrades were completed in the enclosure to help preserve the mural for years to come. STL will also be installing updated exhibition signage identifying all individuals and highlighting their achievements and contributions to aviation. Recently reinstalled, Black Americans in Flight is available to view on the baggage claim level of Terminal 1, at the C Concourse exit, near Exit 11.
