Concrete Construction: STL Photo of the Week

As the busy summer travel season begins, so does a major runway construction project at St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL). At over 9,000 feet long and 150 feet wide, Runway 12L-30R is one of the primary runways at STL. Throughout the next few months, crews will be removing markings, completing electrical upgrades, installing LED light bulbs, and replacing 50 feet of concrete on both sides of Runway 12L-30R. Many STL projects are planned years in advance and completed during the summer, as it provides the best opportunity for cooperative weather. This improvement project was funded in part by a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grant, which will cover 75 percent of all costs. As part of our continued sustainability efforts, all the concrete removed during this project will be reused. After excavation, the concrete will be crushed and used as a base for the newer layers of concrete. Whether we’re excavating, crushing, or paving, everyday we’re huSTLing.
